The Maldives is situated off the Western Seaboard of Southern India stretching between the 7 degree meridian in the North to just below the Equator in the South. The Atolls are actually the tips of a submerged volcanic mountain range sculptured by the ocean currents and overlaid with centuries of rich coral growth.
Consisting of some 1200 islands in 23 Atolls, the country stretches over 1000 kilometres from North to South and 200 kilometres East to West. Around 90 islands are resorts, 200 are local islands and the rest are uninhabited. Air temperatures average around 30 degrees centigrade and water temperature between 27 and 30 degrees all year round. Around 60% of the area is unexplored as far as diving is concerned.
